Betting Exchange

Betting Exchange

$60.54

A betting exchange is a form of bookmaking in which the operator offsets its risk perfectly through technology, such that the effect to the customer is that customers are seen to bet between themselves. Coined because of its apparent similarities to a stock exchange it is often defined as a stock exchange for bets it is therefore commonly seen as a peertopeer gambling website, when in fact it is more closely described as manytomany. Equally, it is often suggested, or commonly believed, that the operator is merely acting as a broker between parties for the placement of bets, rather than a bookmaker, although the reality is that bets are being accepted and offered simultaneously through the exchanges technological interface. Since it is only the exchange operator who holds a bookmakers licence in most cases, the legal and licencing requirements invariably dictate that the legal contract for all bets be with the operator itself and not between customers. Most betting on a betting exchange has been a form of fixed odds gambling, although recently the phenomenon was also briefly established in the sports spread betting market. Betting on Theories

This book is a major new contribution to decision theory, focusing on the question of when it is rational to accept scientific theories. The author examines both Bayesian decision theory and confirmation theory, refining and elaborating the views of Ramsey and Savage. He argues that the most solid foundation for confirmation theory is to be found in decision theory, and he provides a decisiontheoretic derivation of principles for how many probabilities should be revised over time. Professor Maher defines a notion of accepting a hypothesis, and then shows that it is not reducible to probability and that it is needed to deal with some important questions in the philosophy of science. A Bayesian decisiontheoretic account of rational acceptance is provided together with a proof of the foundations for this theory. A final chapter shows how this account can be used to cast light on such vexing issues as verisimilitude and scientific realism. Author: Maher, Patrick/ Skyrms, Brian/ Adams, Ernest W. Yellow Sam Betting Coup

Yellow Sam Betting Coup

$68.51

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Yellow Sam betting coup was a successful sports betting scam, infamous within Irish and British thoroughbred horse racing. It happened at Bellewstown on 26 June 1975, and was orchestrated by Barney Curley, a Northern Irish professional gambler and entrepreneur. By taking advantage of an underhandicapped horse and the lack of easy communications between the Bellewstown racing course and offcourse bookmakers, Curley made a profit of over IR 300,000 (> 1.7m adjusted for inflation) one of the largest betting coups in Irish history. Yellow Sam was a slow but steady horse bought by Curley and was given his name from his fathers nickname at the races. Curley instructed the horses trainer, Liam Brennan, to train Yellow Sam specifically for the somewhat obscure annual National Hunt race at Bellewstown, featuring mostly amateur jockeys. To ensure that the horse would run at least once with a much lighter handicap than would normally be the case, Curley first ran the horse in a series of races on other tracks in unfavourable conditions.
